Social Ministry
Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me" (Matthew 25:40)
The social ministry of the Nile Sudanese Lutheran Mission will provide Literacy in Sudanese Language, address lack of education (English) among Sudanese women, and provide more orientation to American Culture. The ministry will also organized fellowship and cultural events, asses needs of the congregation (Emergency, Food, Clothing and Furniture), and help with Job Search.
Children and Women
The literacy in Sudanese language will empower the Sudanese children to read and write Sudanese language. This knowledge will enhance the participation of these youngsters in the life of the Nile Sudanese Lutheran Mission.
In similar connection, The Social Ministry of the Nile Sudanese Lutheran Mission will address the needs of women in the community. The civil war in Sudan has created a huge gap between men and women in term of education. According to the study conducted by the NewSudanCenter for Statistics and Evaluations (NSCSE), only 2% of the Sudanese women are educated. According to the report, a girl born in southern Sudan is far more likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth than she is to complete primary school: one in nine women die in pregnancy or childbirth while only one in 100 girls finishes primary school each year. Therefore, creating a ministry that empowers women is an important interest and priority of the Nile Sudanese Lutheran Mission. There are English as a Second Language (ESL) locations in the city of Rochester, New York, but many situations, such as child care, prevent Sudanese women to participate. So, the Social Ministry of the Nile Sudanese Lutheran Mission will either help find ways to provide child care for Sudanese Women or provide English as a Second Language (ESL).
Fellowship and Cultural Events
The Social Ministry of the NSLM has been and will continues to conduct fellowship and cultural vents among the Sudanese in Rochester, New York and the surrounding cities. At the fellowship gatherings, members of the community share their personal lives and offer meditation, petitions and prayers. In those gatherings, the community celebrates their joys by organizing cultural activities which include traditional dance and music.
Needs Assistance
The Nile Sudanese Lutheran Mission serves in response to God’s love to meet human needs, caring for the sick and the aged, advocating dignity and justice for all people, working for peace and reconciliation …, and standing with the poor and powerless, and committing itself to their needs (By-Laws of SAWC4.02.D). In the last six years the Nile Sudanese Lutheran Mission (NSLM) has been providing emergency assistants to the families in needs. The emergency needs include emergency food, housing, medical assistance, and clothes and furniture for newly arriving Sudanese refugees. The Nile Sudanese Lutheran Mission was able to deliver these emergency services through generous financial help and stewardship of the LutheranChurch of the Incarnate Word. Thanks to the people of the Incarnate Word! Our Outreach Ministry and Social Ministry will work together to raise funds and allocate more resources to meet the emergency needs of the community.
